Certificate in Professional Hairdressing


In this hands-on programme you'll gain the skills required to work in the hairdressing industry. You'll also gain practical work experience at local salons.
  • Qualification:
    • NMIT Certificate in Professional Hairdressing, awarded at Level 3
    • National Certificate in Hairdressing (Salon Support) (Level 2)
    • Unit standards towards the National Certificate in Hairdressing (Hairdressing Practice) (Level 4)

PDFCertificate in Professional Hairdressing Nelson and Marlborough Campuses 2012

Programme Structure:

  • One year full time or in blocks
  • Classes run 9am - 3pm, salon hours 1 - 6pm
  • Starts February
  • Nelson and Marlborough campuses
  • 32 weeks' classroom training in hair salon studies with 2 weeks' work based training in local salons. From Term 2 onwards, two days a week are spent getting hands-on experience in NMIT's on campus hair salon, HeadZone (Nelson) or Hair Savvy (Marlborough).

Content Includes:

  • Health and safety in an industry environment
  • Customer service and sales for the beauty industry
  • Hair trichology and diagnosis
  • Hair concepts
  • Hair design
  • Hair curling and waving
  • Hair colouring
  • Introduction to hair cutting

Entry Requirements

Applicants under 20 years:

  • Minimum of three years' secondary education

Applicants 20 years and over:

  • Open entry

Applicants whose first language is not English are required to demonstrate an IELTS academic score of 5.0, OR equivalent.

> What's Next


Successful graduates of the programme should be ready to enter the industry as a junior apprentice having completed a proportion of the unit standards required to gain the National Certificate in Hairdressing Practice (Level 4).
