Certificate in Community Support Services (Care for the Older Person)


This programme recognises the industry generic knowledge and skills required of support workers working in a health or disability setting. It aims to prepare graduates who are able to give full support to and assist individuals to meet their physical needs including individuals affected by dementia and those who require palliative care. The programme aims to ensure that all graduates will be able to communicate effectively with all of their clients and be fully aware of the individuals' rights and responsibilities. They will be able to ensure that the individuals' environment meets all hygiene standards and they will be able to deal with first aid situations.

Programme structure:

  • Delievered in partnership with Skills Update Training Institute (SUTI)
  • 120 credits, Level 4
  • Self-paced, distance programme
  • Seminars, workshops and work-based training
  • Starts: variable
  • 40 weeks full time study, or part time equivalent

Entry Requirements

Applicants under 20 years:

  • 36 credits at NCEA Level 2 across three subjects with a minimum of 12 credits at NCEA Level 2 in both English and Maths; OR equivalent
Applicants 20 years and over:
  • No minimum academic requirements
All applicants:
  • Preference given to applicants employed or voluntarily working in this area. Supporting documentation and referee reports required. Demonstrated likelihood of success through interview.

Applicants whose first language is not English are required to demonstrate an IELTS academic score of 5.5 issued within the last two years, or equivalent.

> What's Next


Graduates of this programme will be able to provide full support, assistance and care to older persons in health and disability settings. They will also be able to care for clients affected by dementia, those diagnosed with a terminal illness, and provide support and assistance for the families and whanau of clients.
