Certificate in Entry to Automotive Engineering (Level 2)


If you like the idea of working with vehicle engines, this programme is a great place to start.

  • Gain the skills required to follow safe working practices in an automotive workshop and perform basic operations on motor vehicles.
  • You'll be equipped to concentrate on developing higher skills and exprtise in the automotive profession.

Programme structure:
  • One year, full time
  • Starts: February

Content includes:

Eight compulsory courses containing a selection of Level 1, 2 and 3 unit standards include: Automotive Industry Knowledge, Workshop Engineering, Preventative Maintenance, Engine Repairs, Electrical and Electronics, Automotive Systems, General Maintenance, and Cooling and Electrical. 

Entry requirements

Applicants under 20 years:

  • At least 8 credits NCEA Level 1 showing basic literacy; or equivalent
  • At least 8 credits NCEA Level 1 showing basic numeracy; or equivalent

Applicants 20 years and over:

  • No minimum academic requirements

All applicants:

  • Likelihood of success on the programme demonstrated by an interview
  • Student must hold the appropriate drivers license prior to attempting any unit standards that require it.

Applicants whose first language is not English are required to demonstrate an IELTS academic score of 5.0 (with at least 5.0 in each band) issued in the last two years; or equivalent.

Graduates will be able to follow safe working practices in an automotive workshop and perform basic operations on motor vehicles. Equipped with a comprehensive base of skills and experience they will be prepared to study for further national certificates in the motor industry. With 240 hours of workplace experience they will also be equipped to concentrate on developing higher skills and expertise in the automotive profession and hold a certificate in Comprehensive First Aid.
