Certificate in Counselling and Social Work


Start you career in the social services sector with this programme which introduces you to counselling and social work as social service professions. You will develop entry level skills and knowledge of theory in both counselling and social work, linked closely with personal development work.

Content includes

Five courses including:
Introduction to Counselling Theory Skills and Practice; Introduction to Social Work Theory and Practice; Interpersonal Communication and Personal Development; Aotearoa New Zealand Society; Human Growth and Development.

>Entry Requirements

Applicants under 20 years:

  • A minimum of 40 credits at NCEA Lvel 2 across four subjects including a minimum of 12 credits at NCEA Level 2 in English; OR equivalent

Applicants 20 years and over:

  • No minimum academic requirements

All applicants:

  • Will be required to attend an interview

Applicants whose first language is not English are required to demonstrate a IELTS academic score of 5.5 (in each band), issued in the last two years; OR equivalent.

Entry recommendations:
Applicants must demonstrate a likelihood of success on the programme. This is done by:

  • Attending an entry interview; AND
  • Providing supporting documentation;
  • Two written testimonials;
  • Personal declaration form;
  • Interest in 'helping ' work, paid or voluntary;
  • Demonstrate a willingness to engage in personal development work within and outside of the programme

Applicants will be required to:

  • Sign a declaration confirming their health and criminal conviction status;
  • Sign a consent form allowing for a police check.

Support work in a community agency or further advanced study such as the Bachelor of Applied Social Sciences(Counselling) or (Social Work).

This programme is not approved for International students.
