More men are desperately needed in the area of counselling, says NMIT graduate Peter Markham.
Peter, a nursery worker by trade, decided to study counselling after his sight began deteriorating about four years ago.
“I had to look at different ways of earning a living and finding a way I could be useful. Counselling was an area that I felt I could be really productive in, and working with men is a passion for me,” he says.
Accompanied by guide-dog Geoff, Peter successfully completed the Certificate in Counselling at NMIT before moving onto the two-year Diploma in Applied Counselling programme.
Peter, 59, describes his studies as “really good but really challenging” in terms of content as well as personal development.
“It encourages you to deal with your own stuff (issues) and that can be confrontational. It’s been a real personal journey for me,” he says. |
