Shelley Haring |
|
Conference and Events Co-ordinator, Grand Mercure Nelson Monaco Resort |
|
Dip Tourism Management |
Shelley Haring now has a Diploma in Tourism Management under her belt, which backs up her extensive experience in the tourism industry. The 31 year old, who spent eight years working in customer service in the industry, has a management role as the Conference and Events Co-ordinator at the Grand Mercure Nelson Monaco Resort.
“I had tons of industry experience, but until now, no qualifications to back up this experience. I now have the extra skills and knowledge to take my career to the next level. It was the best decision I've ever made.”
Shelley says the NMIT diploma was perfect for her, as she could study part-time and online, while still working full time. “It was a great option to do the final year online and the tutors were fantastic. They were available to help over the phone and by email, and even opened their homes for help with some papers. I felt truly supported and knew that I was a valued student even if I wasn’t attending classes.”
Shelley is proud of herself for getting a respected tertiary qualification and was rapt that she was able to do this in her home town of Nelson. “I’d been out of the study mode for quite a number of years and I don't consider myself particularly disciplined in that area. The Diploma has given me the confidence to move forward in my career.”
Before studying, Shelley had worked in retail and reception for hotels in both New Zealand and overseas. She was also an Air Nelson flight attendant for five years, but its tourism management that is now feeding her passion for the tourism sector. “Every day is so varied – I can be dealing with CEOs of large companies and then brides-to-be. I have to do everything from co-ordinate staff and organise events through to marketing Monaco Resort as Nelson’s prime destination for conferences & functions. I love the diversity of this job and I am so passionate about the Nelson tourism industry.”
Shelley would recommend the Diploma to both school leavers and those already in the workforce. “It took dedication, but what I learnt is that if you have the will to get your qualification then NMIT will do everything they can to help make that happen. They’ve given me a strong foundation for the rest of my career.” |

Situated in the heart of Marlborough wine country, NMIT
offers viticulture courses and wine courses at certificate and diploma
level plus a pathway to the Lincoln University Bachelor of Viticulture and Oenology degree, studied at NMIT's Marlborough campus. Our Diploma in Viticulture and Wine Production can also be studied online and part-time for those currently employed and/or outside of the Marlborough region.
The NMIT Marlborough campus boasts top quality wine facilities, including an on-site vineyard, winery and modern, well-equipped lab facilities. The laboratory facility is situated within the Marlborough Wine Research Centre. Marlborough Winegrowers Association, Sustainable Viticulture and Wine Marlborough also have their offices within the Research Centre. This ensures students have the opportunity for plenty of hands-on vineyard practice and interaction during their study of wine.
The Marlborough region is New Zealand's largest and fastest growing wine region, producing 52 percent of New Zealand's total wine production. This makes it one of the best places to study wine in New Zealand.
