This programme provides:
- Young people and those returning to the work force with a practical supported pathway from school to work
- An opportunity to up skill staff already in employment or provide the opportunity for employees to validate their existing skills with a qualification
Our aim is to create opportunities to gain valuable work experience and increase skill development with progressive and socially responsible employers. It basically works like an apprenticeship scheme.
For employers, this is a simple and effective response to demands for energised, motivated and productive employees and to provide Professional Development for those wishing to consolidate their experience by working towards the National Certificate in Business Administration Level 3 or 4.
This is a one year supported entry into full-time work with complementary study, designed to prepare people for future careers.
NMIT Employment Scholarships integrate the following key features:
- Selection (including referee checks) and recruitment of scholarship candidates
- One year of full-time employment paid by the employer
- Study at a much reduced rate at Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (three hours a week in work time)
- Provision of a training workbook
- Post-placement support throughout the scholarship year from a regional coordinator
- Guidance and support from staff and employers
- Support with future job placement
Information for Applicants:
- Positions are available in junior office administration, banking and customer service within a wide range of workplaces
- Applications are welcomed from young people or those returning to the workforce.
- Download and submit an application form, or pick one up from school careers advisors, youth shadow workers, Work and Income brokers or from Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology
- All applicants are interviewed and suitable candidates are then put forward to employers for selection
Information for Employers:
- You provide one year of full-time paid employment and a commitment to contribute to an employee's development
- You select the employee of your choice. We do the initial recruitment and screening of applicants
- Suitable candidates are then sent to interviews with participating employers for final selection
- Work based training is simplified using a workbook. Experience to date shows that scholarship recipients are fast learners who quickly become effective and productive employees
Successes
Up to 70 percent of graduates of the programme stay working in the region, half of them with the same business.
The programme is in demand from local employers because it's proven to be so successful. The combination of commitment by the students to really do well in the workplace, as well making life easier for employers by organising the recruitment of office staff for them is part of the reason.
There are also very good support mechanisms in place for both the students and their employers.
