Nelson Region

The Nelson-Tasman region is an irresistible blend of lifestyle and stunning landscapes found at the top of the South Island.

The urban centres of Nelson and Richmond are surrounded by three national parks, Abel Tasman, Kahurangi and Nelson Lakes, encompassing golden sandy beaches to rugged mountain terrain. They are blessed with some of New Zealand’s highest sunshine hours.

The region’s economy is based on the ‘big four’ industries: seafood, horticulture, tourism and forestry.
Port Nelson is the largest fishing port in Australasia.
Other growth industries include art and craft, aviation,
engineering
technology and information technology.

The region has low unemployment with opportunities for seasonal or part time work. Or when you need a break, you can take part in some of the many leisure activities on offer.

Enjoy art in its own place amongst the region’s more than 350 working artists, feast on succulent seafood and fine wines at local cafes, vineyards and restaurants or shop for fresh produce and unique crafts at the bustling weekend markets. Nelsonians love sport and there are a wide range of sporting activities, from team sports such as rugby, netball or basketball to kitesurfing, kayaking or mountain biking. Or, chill out to some great live music at one of the many laid-back local venues.
