Research at NMIT is primarily but not exclusively focused on the areas of its undergraduate teaching. It aims to support the needs of its stakeholders regionally and nationally, by both undertaking and encouraging the uptake of applied research in these areas.
Research at NMIT is overseen by the Research and Ethics Committee (research@nmit.ac.nz) and the Animal Ethics Committee (research@nmit.ac.nz).
The following areas have active research groups:
Health and Social Sciences: Staff in these Schools are involved in a wide range of individual and collaborative applied research in the fields of nursing and primary health.
Art and Design: Most of the teaching staff of the Centre for Art and Design in the School of Arts and Media are practising artists actively involved in research activities. The majority of research results in the creation of art works for exhibition.
Business: Staff are involved in a range of business-related research activities, usually with an applied focus. Often one of the proposed outcomes of research projects undertaken in the Business Unit is to better inform practitioners.
Information Technology: Staff are involved in a range of research activities many of which are concerned with the improved teaching of Information Technology.
NMIT also hosts the New Zealand Centre for Evidence Based Practice. This is a multi-disciplinary research centre that actively promotes the construction and use of best practice guidelines based on the best available evidence, in a range of areas. (Contact: Clare Atkins, clare.atkins@nmit.ac.nz)
