Human Resources Information

On behalf of the HR team, it is a pleasure to welcome you to our Institute. Our staff are all part of a team that makes NMIT a valuable and integral part of the Nelson region through our relationships with students, Iwi and the wider community. Our role in Human Resources is to assist all staff in adding value to NMIT, contribute towards achieving the Institute's objectives and assist our students to achieve career or personal goals. We accomplish this through creating an atmosphere that encourages and fosters open and honest communication, co-operation and innovation.

In our offices, on the ground floor of A Block, we have a team of six:

Our friendly Human Resources Administrators are your first point of contact. Donna Scholfield and Don Smith share the Human Resources Advisor role and are able to help with most enquiries. Please drop in to see them with any query regarding employment conditions and benefits. They are happy to help and refer you to others if they cannot provide you with answers to your query. Donna is also responsible for Health and Safety and can be reached at any time by phoning ext 674.

Renee Lenoel is the Salaries Officer and available to help with payroll and leave issues from Monday to Thursday.

As HR Manager, my role encompasses the management of staff issues, Health and Safety, training and development and payroll.

Please feel free to contact any of the team by phone ext 758, email (hradmin@nmit.ac.nz) or in person.

Our ultimate aim as a team is to add value to NMIT through staff and move the Institute forward to meet the needs of our students and the community. We look forward to working with all staff.
- Gary Cox, Human Resources Manager

Other Services Available for Staff:

Employment Assistance Programme (EAP)

EAP is a confidential employer-funded service available to any staff member experiencing personal difficulties that may affect performance, for example: anxiety, illness, career development, family or relationship difficulties.

Help is available through community professionals.

The Human Resources Manager or the Human Resources Advisors can assist staff to make appointments of their choice. Employees can make self referrals or ask for assistance through their manager or a colleague. Employee assistance costs are authorised by Human Resources who keep the identity of EAP applicants and all records strictly confidential.

Equal Employment Opportunities (EEO)

NMIT is committed to providing Equal Employment Opportunity in the workplace. The EEO policy seeks to provide equal access and consideration in areas of recruitment, selection, promotion, conditions of employment and career development without regard to gender, national or ethnic origin, race, disability, age, colour, marital status, presence of bodily organisms, political beliefs, culture, religious belief, or sexual orientation which are irrelevant to the position.

Iwi Liaison

NMIT is committed to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and a working relationship with Iwi ki Te Tau Ihu o Te Waka a Maui. Te Tari Māori and Iwi representatives help NMIT celebrate and officiate at many occasions including graduations, openings and welcomings.

Teaching and Learning Development Support

Because we want you to be the best possible teacher you can be, we provide support for you to develop effective and innovative teaching practice. As a new tutor you will be supported to undertake initial tutor training through our Certificate in Adult Teaching programme. And whether you are new to tutoring or not, you can make use of the Teaching and Learning Support Service for feedback on your teaching, for generating ideas, for problem-solving, for workshops on a variety of topics related to teaching and education and for course design and assessment.

Orientation

Starting a new job can be both exciting and stressful. To help you settle in and become familiar with the various aspects of working at NMIT, your manager will organise an induction programme for you. You are also required to attend, with other new staff members, an orientation to the wider Institute held at the beginning of each semester.

Staffrooms

Each campus has a staffroom for the use of all staff including those working in the evening. Tea, coffee and milo are provided free of charge.

The Restaurant, NMIT Cafe and Headzone

The training restaurants, 'The Restaurant' and student and staff cafes are run by the catering staff and students in the School of Tourism, Hospitality and Wellbeing on the Nelson Campus. This provides opportunities for students to do work experience and gain experience in a commercial environment. The school also has shop sales of food prepared by the catering students.

Staff can also access reasonably priced hair treatments from our training salons 'Headzone' (Nelson) and 'Hair Savvy' (Marlborough).

Other Benefits

Staff members also have access to:

Campus Corner Early Learning Centre (Nelson)
Kaitakawaenga (Māori Student Support Coordinator)
Library Learning Centre
Student Cafeterias
